Double Eruptive Prominences

Double Eruptive Prominences

Double Eruptive Prominences

Lofted ove the Sunon looping magnetic fields, largesolar prominences are composed of relatively cool, dens plasma. When seen against the brilliant solar disk the appearas dark filaments, but these enormou magneticstructuresare bright themselves when viewed against the blackness of spaceas they arc above the Sun's edge.In rare visual treat, these two solar prominences arisingfrom the Sun's southern (lower) hemisphere werecaptured in extreme ultraviolet light by the EIT camera on boardthe space-base SOlarand Heliospheric Observatory (SOHO) on March 21 Forscale, the pair of plasma loops stretch above theSun to a height of about twenty times the diameter ofplanet Earth. In a matter of hours, these prominences apparentl eruptedaway from the Sun's surface and may have been associatedwith a flare and coronal mass ejection.
