M106 in Canes Venatici

Close to the Great Bear(Ursa Major) an surrounded by the starsof the Hunting Dogs (Canes Venatici), this celestial nebula wa discoveredin 1781 by th metricFrench astronome Pierre Mechainand later added to the catalog of his friend and colleagueCharles Messier a M106.Modern deep telescopic views reveal it to be a island universe --a spiral galaxy around 30 thousand light-years across locatedonly about 21 million light-years beyond the stars of the Milky Way.Youthful blue star clusters and reddish stellar nurseriestrace the striking spiral arms of M106.Seen so clearly i thisbeautiful image, the galaxy's brightcore is also visibl acrossthe spectrum from radio to x-rays,making M106 a nearby example of th Seyfert class ofactive galaxies. The bright core of a Seyfert galaxy is believed to be poweredby matter falling into a massiv central black hole.
